Safely tucked away in a lodge room in Mt. Laguna, I can hear the wind gusts. I can hear the drizzle pelting the roof. I can see the fog bank and overcast. I can feel the cold rip through my shirt when I open the door.
Looks like my resupply day yesterday has turned into additional hunker down time. According to the forecasts I can find online, this region, the San Diego county mountains, will be/are being hit with high winds, and possible snow and or rain showers. Anyone up for a hike?
Weather Channel 6:00am Tuesday: 32 degrees, 19 mph winds, wind chill 20.
Even with an expected high of 43 today, the wind chill at best, 36.
National Weather Service Tuesday: A chance of rain and snow showers before 11am, then a chance of snow showers. Some thunder is also possible. Partly sunny, with a high near 43. Windy, with a west wind 25 to 30 mph decreasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
Anyone up for a hike? I think not.
Safety is key. When I think of maybe the top 5 things my grandfather and father emphasized all their lives, one was safety. Be proactive and take preventive measures. Live to play another day. It’s time to stay put.
Hey, it’s not all gloom and doom. It’s be smart, adjust, and roll with the flow. It makes zero sense for me to leave my toasty lodge room with plenty of food, water, and oh, did I mention a fireplace?
Disadvantages? None. Advantages? Plenty. I can write updates like this. I can rest a knee that’s starting to talk back to me. I can organize videos and photos. I can charge electronics. I can once again inventory and refine my gear (you know that never ends), and I can drink lots of hot coffee.
So there have to be adjustments. So what, OK. I think of what Zach Davis and Carly Moree wrote in Pacific Crest Trials, “Focusing on the destination comes at the expense of appreciating the journey.”
The journey is the treasure. And that includes staying put. The destination is just a bonus. Happy trails indeed.
